Jesse Tyler is a 70 year old black man from the Jim Crowe South. His job is to help Miss Melanie, and elderly white woman. He causes a stir by sitting down at a lunch counter at a diner before that was legal and by bringing his granddaughter to an all-white hospital. Thankfully, Miss Melanie backs him up, and forces the doctors to help the girl.
