Barney Matthews was Head Orderly at the Baltimore State Mental Hospital for the Criminally Insane. He was very pleasant and well-read . He was a subservient of Dr.Chilton. He was respected by Dr. Hannibal lecter for his good treatment of Dr. Hannibal Lecter. He later tells Clarice Starling about the wrongdoings made by Dr. Chilton.
