Claire visits Seattle Grace Hospital with her husband Wade because she had recently discovered a rash on her right leg. The couple are newlyweds and are currently on an action-packed honeymoon, complete with 10K runs and extreme sports. They are so crazy for each other that they make-out in Claire's hospital bed.When her doctors Sydney Heron, Alex Karev, and Christina Yang come to examine her, they don't think that the rash should be any trouble. Dr. Yang marks a line on Claire's calf at the highest point of redness to make sure the problem doesn't grow, as the other doctors ask her where she could have gotten it from. Claire tells them that she and Wade had just been climbing on Mt. Rainiers Liberty Ridge, but she didn't fall down or get hurt. Then Wade remembers that she had cut her foot on oyster shells on a beach while windsurfing at Puget Sound not too long ago. The doctors agree that this could have created the problem, which now seems to be serious as the rash has passed the line on Claire's calf and is now up to her knee.Claire is quickly taken to an OR so the infection can be removed, but when Dr. Heron receives a call, the procedure is halted. Claire has Necrotizing fasciitis, deadly flesh-eating bacteria, and all nonessential personnel are asked to leave the room immediately. Wade has to choose whether he should let the doctors amputate Claire's leg and save her, or try and cut out the infection and risk her life. He decides that, because she is an active marathon runner, Claire's leg should be the priority. Dr. Heron and Karev agree and vow to try their best to save her limb, but Christina thinks that they are being unreasonable and should just cut it off. She goes as far as to convince Dr. Preston Burke, the head of Cardiothoracic surgery, to interrupt the surgery and question Sydney Heron's approach.Despite the disagreements, the Necrotizing fasciitis is successfully removed and Claire's leg is saved. The doctors tell her that they will watch it overnight, but they believe that she will recover with the help of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Claire is very thankful that she will be able to continue her active lifestyle with her husband.
