FBI BAU Supervisory Special Agent Jason Gideon was played by Mandy Patinkin. Gideon was one of the BAU's best and most experienced profilers. Six months before the opening episode, he was involved in the apprehension of bomber Adrian Bale and it was his wrong decision which led to the death of six agents. Subsequently, he was placed on medical leave and supposedly suffered a nervous breakdown.Back on the team, he inspires great respect to the other members. He has a special relationship with the young, socially withdrawn, genius Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler), whom he mentors. The two of them often play chess and Gideon continually beats Reid. Not much is known about Gideon's personal life, except the fact that he is divorced and he has a ~25-year-old son. He owns a remote cabin in the woods, where he likes to retire when he needs privacy. He routinely teaches FBI academy students about the BAU and the importance of profiling. He is an avid bird enthusiast: during the Superbowl, while the rest of the team is enjoying time off together in a bar, he is at the Smithsonian viewing an original Audubon print of a mockingbird. To maintain his sanity, he keeps logbooks of the people he saves and often looks at their photos. In the end of season two, Gideon faces a stunningly prolific serial killer, Frank. Their second encounter ends with Frank's death, but only after he murders Gideon's old friend Sarah, as well as Rebecca, a victim that Gideon had previously rescued from another killer. These deaths send Gideon into a spiral of doubt and disbelief, compromising the following case and ultimately resulting in his resignation from the BAU.Realizing that his departure will impact Reid the most, since he was the closest to a father figure in Reid's life, Gideon carefully writes a letter to him, attempting to explain his sudden decision to quit. He leaves the letter along with his badge and gun at the cabin for Spencer to find. Initially, Spencer feels angry and hurt, but eventually he re-reads the letter and presumably comes to terms with Gideon's departure. Gideon never returns to the BAU and has no further contact with any member of the team.He is last seen driving off from a Nevada Diner, on a journey with no apparent destination.Eight years after retiring from the FBI, Gideon is found shot to death in his cabin, and the BAU is called in on the case. The team traces his movements prior to his death. They learn that Gideon had discovered that a tortured middle-aged woman, who has turned up recently dead of natural causes, is the same girl who had been missing since a teenager in an old cold case that he and David Rossi (Joe Mantegna) had worked on in 1978; the unsub then discovered Gideon was back on his trail and murdered him.Rossi recalls the case (in flashbacks with Ben Savage as young Gideon and Robert Dunne as young Rossi in the beginning days of the BAU) and re-interviews the mother of the victim. The team determines a recently disappeared young local woman to be the unsub's latest victim, the replacement in the unsub's life. They profile the unsub with the old case files as well as newly discovered information left by Gideon, and rescue the missing young woman and bring Gideon's killer to justice. Show less «
