She met actor Aamir Khan on sets of Lagaan (2001). They were married in December 2005. Kiran Rao is the second wife of Aamir Khan. After suffering a couple of miscarriages, the couple had a son born via surrogate on December 1, 2011.Since 2001, she has been assisting in prominent movies. She scripted, directed, and produced the acclaimed Dhobi Ghat (2010).
