She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, grew up in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, and is of mixed Egyptian and Italian heritage. In 2001, she began her post-secondary studies at New York University and received her B.A. in 2005. In 2014, she served as a communications strategist for The Source, a magazine about hip-hop culture.
